I have a list of between ten and fifteen books that I only read in the summer, and each book has a specific place where it is read. It's a delight to revisit old friends each year, and this more than anything else underscores the timelessness I strive for in every summer of my life--a time when rituals are established and repeated, year after year; the same foods are eaten; the same places visited; the same rhythm of each summer day. It's a way to suspend the passing of time and rest in an otherwise busy year.
